Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s),

I am so excited about the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. We will explore challenging and interesting literary material through critical analysis, synthesis and evaluation. We will examine the connections between literature and "real world" experiences through writing and in-depth conversation. Literary analysis and novel discussion are just two components of the English curriculum designed to help students sharpen essential skills through relevant and rigorous engagement. This year's English summer reading assignment supports the state's reading initiative that prioritizes reading as a core value.

Over the summer, I expect rising seniors to read the assigned book below by Jeanette Walls. In-depth discussion questions and assignments are scheduled to begin August 13, 2018.

A great starting point to obtain the reading material listed below is at the local public library. Also, area bookstores carry the books as new or used.

If the book is purchased from a bookstore or online, it gives students the opportunity to highlight and make notes within the pages to help the student read more critically. Annotating is a useful tool in this class and will be a great benefit to your child throughout the course of the class.
