Hurricane Irma Storm Update
The Madison County Board of County Commissioners declared a local state of emergency effective Wednesdayevening in preparation of Hurricane Irma. While the storm is forecasted to turn a little more to the east, County staff are communicating constantly with state officials and closely watching the storm’s track. Small changes in the storm’s direction can make a big difference in our protective actions.
Tropical storm force winds are expected in our area early Sunday morning and throughout the day. Madison County Schools will be open tomorrow, Friday September 8, 2017. They will be closed Monday, September 11, 2017 and Tuesday September 12, 2017
Madison County schools plan to reopen Wednesday September 13, 2017. North Florida Community College and St. Leo University reported they will be closing on Friday at 3:00 pmthrough Monday, September 11, 2017.The Madison County Central School (MCCS) will open as a risk shelter and special needs on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 5:00 pm for people living in Madison County that need a safe place to ride out the storm. MCCS is the ONLY approved risk shelter in our county designed to withstand storm force winds.
Madison County offices as well as the City of Madison, Town of Greenville and Town of Lee will be closed Monday. However, crews and essential personnel will be out responding as needed. We are seeing an influx of evacuees from South Florida on several of the major roadways. It is recommended that you only travel if absolutely necessary. All motel rooms are full. Campgrounds still have campsites available.
According to the Tallahassee National Weather Service, large amounts of rainfall are not expected for the Big Bend portion of the State. They are predicting 3 to 5 inches at this time. River flooding is not expected.
Please remember to continue to monitor the weather, because small shifts in the storms direction over the next several days can change things quickly. Hurricane Irma Storm Update
Madison County Commissioners are meeting at 5:15 this afternoon to consider declaring a local state of emergency in preparation of the Hurricane Irma. County staff are communicating constantly with state officials and closely watching the storm’s track. Small changes in the storm’s direction can make a big difference in our protective actions.
At this time, Madison County Schools are planning to be open Thursday, September 7 and Friday September 8, 2017. Any future decisions regarding school closures will be decided as the storm track progresses.
Madison County will be seeing an influx of evacuees from South Florida. All motel rooms are full. Campgrounds still have campsites available. Madison County Emergency Management and local churches are preparing to assist the Red Cross in opening Host Shelters for out of county evacuees. We will issue a new press release when the Host Shelters become available.
As weather conditions warrant, we may open the Madison County Central School (MCCS) for those people living in Madison County that need a safe place to ride out the storm. MCCS is the ONLYapproved risk shelter in our county designed to withstand storm force winds.
