Students visited Publix’s who is a great sponsor of The Able Trust for a site visits.

Ms. Lisa Jones began our tour discussing the Pharmacy.  Reminding the students that the Pharmacist is employed by Publix’s and that jobs are available working in the pharmacy though an industry certification process.

The Bakery and Deli Department told students that having the skills in cake decorating is essential, but with positive potential, a person could be hired and be interned.  Within the Deli, the manger there spoke of the requirements of Florida and OSHA standards required, for example you must be 18 to work in the deli department due to using fryers and deli cutter.

Visited the Produce (Ms. Jones is responsible for both Produce and Florist), Seafood, and Meat Departments and discussed age requirements and criteria to work in these areas.

At the conclusion of the visit, discussed the benefits of working at Publix’s.  Some examples a student can get hired at the age of 14 (meeting Federal and State requirements); benefits and retirement information; and why you complete your application at a kiosk in the front of the store.

Ms. Lisa Jones is also a full time teacher at Leon County School system.  She sent a wonderful e-mail to our Madison County Superintendent of Schools and praised our students.  “Good morning, Dr. Pickles and Ms. Wildgoose,

I hope you are both doing well this morning.

Yesterday, while at my part-time job with Publix, I had the pleasure of providing a tour of our store with a group of students from Madison.  What a great experience it was for me and I just wanted to say how honored I was to meet all of the students.  They represented themselves, their school and their community so well and you should be very proud of them.

Ms. Agner and Mr. Radel did a beautiful job preparing the students for the trip and it was evident that they enjoy the work they do as educators.

Have a very Merry Christmas and if I can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.”
